In the Bible, the word ‘sickness’ often refers to a state of spiritual malady. One can be spiritually sick if he lacks the grace of God. Some believe that humans have a spiritual body, or soul, and that this part of their nature is essential for human life. Sick souls lack the divine spark that keeps them alive. In addition to influencing our health, a good relationship with God should have a positive effect on our mental well-being. Therefore, it is crucial to understand what soul sickness is and how it affects people’s mental health. According to The Gospel at Hand, people who feel they are living with a soul sickness may experience several negative feelings. They may feel disconnected from others and from God. In addition, they may feel guilt and shame over their perceived lack of worth as a human being. A sick soul may also lack empathy for others and find it difficult to form emotional bonds with others. Ultimately, someone who feels he is spiritually sick may have trouble feeling any love for himself or for others.

What Is Soul Sickness?

You know that feeling when you’re in a crowded room and you still feel terribly alone? Or when you’re having a conversation, it all feels a little pointless and superficial? Maybe you have a gut feeling that something is missing in your life, but you’re not sure what it is? You’ve met all the criteria for life – career, family, friends, fun, fitness and health. But you deeply desire more.

I describe it as a “Soul fatigue”. We’ve lost our much-needed community pillars, elders, shared values, commitments, and a belief in “bigger than us.” When everything lacks meaning, purpose, or depth, it leads to the existence of loneliness and anxiety.

So what can we do? First, it’s important to show yourself some compassion. Most of us have struggled with mental illness at some point in our lives. It also doesn’t mean you have to give up all your worldly possessions and live in a nunnery (unless you want to, of course).
